Who knew that orienting members to different roles in worship would be helpful? The first two short sessions in Equipping the Saints focused on the spirituality and practice of reading in worship and leading the prayers of the people. Next up are Liturgical Assistant: Walk Slowly, Look Holy and Greeting: More Than Handing Out the Bulletin.
Participants in the reading session learned the trick for pronouncing complicated names--no one else knows how to do it either. The session on leading the prayers of the people showed participants that there is an underlying structure within which there is opportunity connect the readings for the day with the hopes and hurts of the community.
If you missed either of these sessions but are interested in reading or leading prayers of the people, Tasha and Kim would be happy to do a one-on-one orientation. We've learned that we can overwhelm people with the possibilities for doing a deep dive. But we can also show how to take small steps to get a taste--enough to give you confidence to step into helping lead worship. The handouts and sample prayers are combined in the download below.
Next Sunday, May 17, will be on the role of Liturgical Assistant. The session will include a bit of liturgical theology, followed by practical how-tos. The sessions always include plenty of discussion and, because it's the first time Tasha is doing a proper orientation for LAs, we may well make some changes to this role. Come if you're curious about liturgical theology; stay if you'd like the practical how-tos.
Sunday May 24 will be about greeting. This is a crucial role, even in a small place like St. Mary Mags. The greeter is the first point of contact for newcomers and visitors. But what about the theology? Yes, even for such a pragmatic position, there will be God-talk.
